Pardon the politics but…

October 21st, 2009

Political partisans can be so amusing! Not to leave anyone out but at the moment the “Conservatives” are the ones who are amusing me the most. I’ve noticed that Conservatives are generally big fans of the Tenth Amendment or at least they always bring that up whenever Liberals or moderates in Congress want to pass new legislation. Now I’m not saying they’re necessarily wrong. We have too many laws already. I don’t think we need to legislate everything. (Although, I often dislike state laws even more than I dislike Federal ones.)

So anyway… Conservatives think that states should be allowed to manage their own affairs without unnecessary interference from the Federal Government, right? So they must be happy about this decision.

WASHINGTON (AP) — The Obama administration will not seek to arrest medical marijuana users and suppliers as long as they conform to state laws, under new policy guidelines to be sent to federal prosecutors Monday.

Two Justice Department officials described the new policy to The Associated Press, saying prosecutors will be told it is not a good use of their time to arrest people who use or provide medical marijuana in strict compliance with state laws.

Regardless of how you feel about marijuana, medical or otherwise, let’s be clear on this point: The Obama Administration has decided not to interfere in internal state affairs in this matter. They have decided not to waste resources that could be directed toward stopping more dangerous criminals. This is not only a good decision, it is a conservative decision. Will Conservatives agree? I’m not going to browse all the Conservative sites to see what the general consensus is but I happened to come across this post on American Digest and experience leads me to believe that this will be the typical “Conservative” reaction. Come on, prove me wrong.

Well, since I wrote the item linked above…. and since I am not a “conservative”…. nor even a “Republican”…. I think I can say with some conviction that, well, you are wrong.

In fact, if you scroll down on the post to the post from last December, you;ll read: “The good news here is that, maybe, the Federal Government will get out of the War on Dope and concentrate on crack, coke, and crank. The bad news is that the Federal Government may get into the cultivation and distribution of “Official” weed. If they do, it will be the methadone of marijuana: You won’t get sick. You won’t get high. You’ll just stay on it.”

Somehow I don’t think that encapsulates the expected “conservative” response, do you?

My apologies if I mis-read you but “…because, in the America of the very near future you’re going to have to be very, very stoned not to see how deeply you’re being screwed…. and because stoned people, if they can get off the couch, tend to vote for their pushers.” sounded to me like something a Republican would say. (Or perhaps someone parodying the republicans.)

It’s possible to disapprove of Obama’s policies and not be conservative. In fact, most of the people who are being called “conservative” these days should actually be called “libertarian,” and so far all of the ones I read approve of this particular ruling.

Anyway, I do agree that liberals these days aren’t very funny.

Republicans these days are beyond parody.

As are Democrats, come to think of it.

    Yes! Someone who understands.

I’m conservative on some issues, liberal on others and also somewhat libertarian but not radically so. I often find politics amusing and often annoying but seriously, the blue fungus is way more interesting.
