Cute and Trippy

November 16th, 2009

Tea light lava lamps – Little lava lamps powered by tea light candles. I’m not sure whether I like the pink or turquoise better.

You know, I was just thinking about lava lamps a few days ago, wondering what we’re going to do when there are no more incandescent bulbs and the only thing available is environmentally correct* bulbs that don’t get hot. I suppose this is one answer, if you’re willing to settle for a tiny lava lamp.

( * I propose that we all start using the abbreviation “EC”, short for environmentally correct”, in place of “green”. )

Perhaps a hot plate, set on low? Or a halogen lamp? I’ve noticed that halogens don’t seem to be (yet) suffering the environmentally INcorrect stigma. They get nice and hot.

Something else I’ve wondered… not just light bulbs… why is it EVERYTHING that’s “Green” seems to cost 2-10 times as much as whatever it replaces? A Prius that gets 50 MPG (40 in the real world) costs $22,000, when a scant 10 years ago, a Metro could be had for $9,000, and would actually get 50 MPG or more? I can get a pack of four dirty old Tungsten filament (I can spell tungsten… but not incandescent… weird) bulbs for $1, while a six pack of the “clean” compact fluorescent (Which contain mercury) cost $15? The only way one can save money by being “green” is to use rechargeable batteries, and they still require a big initial investment.

Wait until the eco-fascists get to small engines. An electronic fuel injected, emissions controlled push lawnmower will be nearly twice as heavy, and will cost several hundred dollars. And once it breaks, it’s garbage time – and you will need to buy another $600 lawnmower. Or pay a mechanic $550 to fix it.

It’s all about the wealth redistribution, baby. Redistribution of your wealth into the pockets of the eco-fascists. “Green” enterprise is the biggest, most successful scam ever.

Nooooo! Don’t put a lava lamp on a hot plate! Don’t you remember that episode of “Mythbusters”?

I’m hoping there will be some kind of amnesty for certain things – I think I mentioned before that I use Tullgren funnels in my research, and their success at extracting invertebrates from leaf litter or soil depends on a lamp that gets warm. Those swirly bulbs won’t do the trick. And LED bulbs won’t either, I guess. And it would be too dangerous to buy and use an immersion heater (like you use for making tea when traveling) in them, but I may be reduced to that.

I’m waiting for some researcher to find that fluorescent lights “caused” the obesity epidemic, and then watch the heads of those who would dictate to us “for our own good” explode.

Somehow people with causes always seem to adjust to changing evidence and what they formerly denied becomes something that they have always known and all the things they told us become things they never said.

I was hoping someone else would remember the mythbusters episode with the lava lamp and the hot plate. :-)

Actually, the can of beans from that episode was a lot more memorable :)
