This will be my first ranting/complaining post of 2010, though these complaints are left over from last year. I’m still cold. Except when I’m too hot. There is no “happy medium”. When I put on more clothes - say, a lightweight flannel shirt over the shirt I’m already wearing - more often than not I immediately feel like I’m roasting in an oven and I can’t get the extra shirt off fast enough. And then, of course, I am immediately cold again. I experimentally change clothes several times a day trying to find exactly the right weight and number of layers that I need to be comfortable.
My feet are an even worse problem. They’re usually either cold or swimming in sweat. The only time my feet are really comfortable is when I’m wearing my big, clunky fleece lined boots and the thick, pink wool boot socks that I bought at Wal-mart several weeks ago. I LOVE those socks. The boots are too warm indoors but the socks are too thick for any other shoes. Sometimes I do wear them around the house. Even though they’re not perfect they’re better than anything else I have.
Of course, this is partly my own fault. After procrastinating for weeks, yesterday I finally ordered some wool socks that I think will not be too thick for normal shoes. I ordered three different pairs and if I like any of those I will order more of the same. None of them are really what I was looking for. I wanted plain black or brown socks because they go with everything but almost all of the wool socks that look like they might be normal thickness have stripes or flowers or something on them. Either that or they cost over $30 for just one pair (WTF?!) or they lack spandex and therefore would likely be saggy or they only come in men’s sizes and all that just drives me crazy! I don’t understand why I can’t get what I want when what I want is so simple!
Right now I’m wearing World’s Softest Socks which are very comfortable when it’s merely cool or slightly cold but they’re acrylic so they feel clammy if the temperature is not just right. Also, the ones I bought last year are not as good as the ones I bought several years ago. They have less, or weaker, elastic so they’re a little bit saggy. I hate when one of my favorite things lets me down. They do wear well though. The ones that are several years old are still like new and I have worn them a lot.
So anyway, I’m impatiently waiting for my wool socks, which should arrive Friday afternoon. I guess I need to go clean out my sock drawer. It’s already overstuffed. I have socks for every season and purpose and I need them all but surely there’s something in there that I never wear anymore.
If I manage to make my feet comfortable I still need to figure out something for the rest of me.
