What Color Is That?

May 10th, 2010

Color Chart for Girls and Guys – funny and so true. I’ve noticed that some guys are especially sensitive to pink and define it much more broadly than what is indicated on the chart. To a certain guy I know who shall remain nameless almost any light purple is “pink” and peaches and corals that are well into the orange part of the spectrum are also “pink”.

But I do have some sympathy for the guys. (aside from the pink-phobia thing) We tend to use the most common color names invented by clothing retailers and they keep changing them every year. Many of these color names really are almost identical and, to be honest, we gals often don’t know what to call a particular color either and we often disagree. I remember several women co-workers having a bit of an argument about the color of a skirt I was wearing that I had always thought of as “cranberry red.” None of them agreed with me that it was cranberry but they couldn’t agree on what to call it.

And on that chart, I immediately noticed that they got many of the color names wrong. The “maraschino” is actually more of a tomato red and the “orchid” is way off. It’s actually closer to periwinkle. And the lavender is much too pink. I know colors can look different on different monitors but I don’t think mine is that far off. Some of the colors look right, salmon and the yellows, for example.

Thanks.

I agree that “orchid” is way off. And I’m sure my monitor is a different brand/model from yours.

I think of “orchid” as a very pale bluish purple – but just barely bluish. Similar to their “lavender” but paler.

“Sea foam” should also be paler and greyer, IMHO.

I used to know a guy who would describe reds in terms of how ‘blue’ or ‘green’ it was.

He was a colour editor for a magazine.

That’s interesting. I’ve heard people talk about reds being a little bit ‘blue’ or ‘orange’ but never green. I can see how someone who works with colors all the time would be able to recognize slight differences.
