103 Degrees

August 14th, 2010

There’s a rule. I’m sure it has a special name or number known to people who keep up with these things. The rule is that household appliances and systems will fail when you need them the most. Today’s high is supposed to be 103°F. We’re turning off the air-conditioning and replacing all the duct-work because the old stuff is falling apart. No, it couldn’t have waited until October. That’s just the way things are. The good news: it’s under the floor, not in the attic.

UPDATE: We survived and the refrigerated box we live in is back to normal. Yay air conditioning!

I’m taking a few days off. I might have time for a quick post tomorrow morning but I’m not sure. Have a nice week.

As a former sailor who spent a couple of summers floating around the Indian Ocean, you have my deepest sympathies.

There is a perfectly good reason that some things fail when we need them most. It’s because at that time, we are stressing a part or system, most likely one that is taken for granted. When the thermometer reaches 111 degrees, the the A/C will fail. When you’re backing the fifth wheel camper up in the background, it’s a perfect opportunity to burn up the clutch. When you’re in a hurry, you’re going to break a bootlace trying to tie them.

Not that this makes it any easier to sit in the 111 degree house, re-lace the boots in a hurry, or change out the clutch on what is supposed to be vacation. It just happens that way.
