Quotes From Here and There

March 21st, 2008

I get my ideas mostly by stealing them from my betters. The only difference between a great author and a mediocre one is that great authors steal from the greats. I suggest reading the classics for loot.here

Many a time I have nearly choked in astonished hilarity at what some politician has said in all seriousness, and yet, in the end, I am left disquieted, as if having laughed at a profane joke at the expense of everything sacred and worthwhile.there

OK, I read that John C. Wright interview, and as always, there’s something that strikes me “off” about him, as though he knows lots of big words and can speak in very long sentences but may well be completely wrong. At one point, he needs to cite an example of a hard-SF movie and comes up with Apollo 13, which isn’t SF at all, unless anything involving space is SF by definition, which is clearly silly.

That is a good quote, though.

Yeah, I agree with you about that. I’m thinking I might try one of his books though. There are a lot of talented people who are “off”.

I started “The Golden Age” once and bounced off it completely. It wasn’t that I didn’t like it, but that I didn’t get it at all. My impression was that it was SO full of stylized SF jargon that I had no idea at all what was going on for about a hundred pages. This was four or five years ago, though, so I may owe him another go.
