Well Known Classical Music

December 9th, 2010

Classical Top 100 – Whether or not these are actually the top 100 is, of course, arguable but this is a useful list. Brief samples of each piece are included. (plus links to iTunes and Amazon) So if you’ve ever heard classical music in a TV commercial and wondered what it was chances are good that you’ll find it in this list.

I won’t argue with that list. You notice that every tune from Disney’s Fantasia is on that list, as well as the various opera pieces featured in Warner Bros’ Looney Toons and Merrie Melodies cartoons? And every one of these, when included in an orchestral concert, will be described as a warhorse in the local newspaper’s review the next day.

That’s the thing about warhorses: they live to fight another day.

Some works on the list seem to be primarily because of association with pop culture things, while the list is missing such as “Libiamo nelieti calici” (also known as just “Brindisi”–the “drinking song from Act I of La Traviata) which darned near everyone has heard or arguably the last the really great song written ;-) , “Nessun Dorma” (Turandot), a song so good it even makes Paul Potts sound good and almost makes Michael Bolton bearable. *heh*

I might quibble about ranking some lower and subbing in other works. I might choose different Copland pieces, for example, and where, mom frere, is something, anything, by Sibelius? Anyone ever see Die Hard 2? Part of “Finlandia” as the planes land. Almost as strong–and memorable–as listening to the whole piece by itself. *heh* But it’s a decent enough list, all things considered.
