What Happened to Spring?

March 31st, 2011

I am used to Oklahoma’s wildly variable winter weather. I knew that we would almost certainly have more cold weather, but I felt, when temperatures rose into the 60s and even 70s soon after our record breaking cold and snowfall, that Mother Nature had decided to give us our entire winter all at once and that once we were past that Event we would have nothing but beautiful spring-like weather. Well, we all know Mother Nature is a bitch. She has no sense of fairness at all.

It has been cold all week. Mostly it has stayed above freezing and I keep telling myself that compared to the -21° we had back in February this really isn’t that bad but I’m cold, darn it! Where are the hot flashes when I really need them? This morning when I got up it was 32°F now it’s 37°. The house never really warms up on cold, cloudy days. I feel like I should be sewing – I want to be sewing – but my hands are too cold.

I need to go to town again today. I need to order the Formica for our kitchen countertops. I might be able to get the same as what we have now so we can save the island countertop but if I can’t get that I found 3 other blues that I like equally well. I was hoping it would warm up before I have to go. It was supposed to clear up and get up to 60°F. but it doesn’t look very hopeful for that right now. Still… you know what they say, “If you don’t like the weather here just wait a minute.”

I just want you to know, as I sit here on the back of a boat in Ventura, wearing shorts & tee shirt, sipping my morning coffee and watching the sun rise….

…that I feel for you. Really.

    Definitely no sense of fairness

I would mind the variable weather far less if it didn’t play hob with my sinuses. Wound up fighting a migraine for most of today, just to have it evaporate five minutes after I told my Soils class, “I’m really sorry, this sinus headache is just too much for me right now, I’m going to have to end class early…”

We’re expecting snow/sleet tonight. Grrr… And the weather affects my sinuses too. I’ve been feeling like I’m coming down with something all week. When I lived in Florida, I was like “Bleh, more sun,” because the sun shines there all the damn time. Now I’m like “Suunnnnn I want suuunnnnn…”

Haha, the pass code word I’m getting in the thing below is “anging.” That’s what I feel like — I’m angsty and aging.

I hate to say this because it makes me sound like I’m old but the cold, damp weather we’ve been having all week makes my knees and hips ache really bad. This afternoon the sun finally came out and I actually feel better. I used to never believe that was true about weather and aches. Damn I hate being wrong.

I know! I used to love cold, damp weather because we so rarely had the combination in South Florida (you get hot and damp or cold and dry, usually), and when we did I would pretend I lived in England. (I was quite the Anglophile.) Now I find myself these days thinking of tropical beaches. Darned old biddy brain. On the other hand, when it’s July and it’s 95 degrees in the shade I’ll be yearning for… tropical beaches where at least you always have the sea breeze.

I was very surprised to see some wet snow this evening.
