I even remember reading commentary on Usenet, back during the first couple of seasons, in which Mulder was made fun of for always having his cell phone with him! — here (It’s amazing how quickly we go from, “Can you believe those people?” to being one of those people.)
The thing that frustrates me a bit about the trash-off days is that the population of people who PICK UP trash, and the population of people who TOSS OUT trash from their cars are two different populations. So no one ever learns the lesson that there is someone out there arduously picking up their old Sonic drink cups, or their empty cigarette boxes, or the beer bottles they decided they had to ditch before getting home… — there
And we just sprayed for goats last week, too. — here

Re trash: remember back in the 70s when the tv and everything else was inundated by “don’t litter” commercials and warnings? Even the old Polaroid camera I found in a thrift store has a warning right on it about being careful to toss your discarded film negatives and tabs (the camera uses that peel-apart pack film) in the trash! I don’t recall having seen anything like that in modern times, beyond the bilingual “basura/trash” signs on public trash cans. And it looks like the stigma against littering is on its way out too.

Yeah, as a child of the 70s, I was raised to be very anti-littering. (I think if I had thrown something out of the car, my mom or dad would have stopped the car, made me get out, made me pick it up, and then I would have been in further trouble when I got home).
I vividly remember the Iron Eyes Cody “Crying Indian” PSAs.
The thing that bugs me about litter is that to me, it seems so unnecessary. I mean, pollution in the service of providing electricity: yes, pollution is bad, but the trade off is that people need electric power. But it doesn’t seem to me that people “need” to throw drink-cups out of their car and stuff. It’s like vandalism: a few selfish people make the world a lot uglier for everyone else.
