Here’s a skeptical article about biofuels with a long debate in the comments. It might turn out to be true that biofuels are not practical but the “don’t even try” attitude seriously annoys me. I suppose he thinks it would be a perfect world if we all threw out our toys and moved to little organic farms and lived in one room cabins with only candles for light. And who knows? Future generations might be forced to live that way but I’m not ready to give up yet. Excuse this little burst of patriotism but we’re Americans and we don’t give up. We try things, we fail, we try again, and again, and eventually we find a way.

Yes, lets live in a cabin, be vegans, and say NO to petroleum products, and products that come from animals!
…so… …how do you do that? What are candles made of? Wax. Usually parrafin wax which comes from, you guessed it, oil. So, what about tallow candles? That’s made from animal fat. Is there a vegetable based candle? Soy wax, maybe palm wax… If you want to go through the process of making it, assuming you can get the materials. Beeswax, of course, but that’s against the vegan “Can’t use animal products” mentality. Or is it “Can’t use products from cute animals”? I can’t remember.
We could power all the electric cars we wanted, without using coal plants, if we would just go nuclear….

The whole thing about all of this “let’s go back to nature” is that the “let’s” never includes the pontificator. They will continue to live in air conditioned mansions and drive gas guzzling luxury cars. All us little people are the ones who need to live in dirt huts with candles for light.
