I bought a new pressure cooker. It’s the Tramontina 6 liter/6.3 quart. I read lots of reviews and this one had only one but it didn’t have any bad reviews and I have a couple of regular cooking pans made by the same company and I’m very happy with their quality.
I have wanted a pressure cooker for years but I wasn’t sure why, other than my mother has always had one and she’s a better cook than I am. Also, I had to have stainless steel and those are expensive, so I have been putting off buying one for 30 years. Now that I have it I’m still not totally sure what to do with it. I’m going to try cooking some brown rice in it tonight and maybe a roast this weekend.
I found this website that’s all about pressure cooking: Miss Vickie’s Pressure Cooker Recipes. Other than really badly needing proofreading it’s a great site. It’s not just recipes; it’s a complete pressure cooking how-to.

I guess I’m dating myself a bit, but whenever I see “Miss Vickie,” I think of one of Tiny Tim’s brides.
I used to describe autoclaves to my classes as working somewhat similarly to a pressure cooker (well, they do), but no one gets it because most of this up and coming generation doesn’t COOK, let alone own a pressure cooker.
(I don’t own one; honestly, I’m a little afraid of them after reading stories about pressure valves gone bad.)

I’ve always been afraid of them but that’s because the one my grandmother had was one of those aluminum beasts that hissed and shook, and one day she made beef tongue in it. Once you see a giant boiled tongue coming out of something you tend to stay away from anything like that.

Ewwww… I can imagine! My mother\’s was one of those noisy aluminum beasts too but mostly what came out of it was delicious tender roasts and barbeque.

I have two hand-me-down pressure cookers – one a normal pressure cooker, the other a pressure canner. Ancient, dependable and awesome. I loves my pressure cooker. Granted, the microwave has kind of taken the place of things that used to be done faster in the pressure cooker, like potatoes for mashing. But I love the hiss and rattle of it and the whistle when you remove the pressure regulator.
