At the Movies

February 3rd, 2012

We saw Joyful Noise last night. It was a fun, good old-fashioned feel good movie. (with the modern addition of sex and profanity but not a lot) Dolly Parton, no matter what the movie or the name of her character, always plays herself so one must endure a heaping helping of exaggerated redneck-isms as always but overall it was a charming movie with mostly very good actors and singers.

The movie is about a small-town church choir whose director dies while they are preparing for a national choir competition. Queen Latifah plays the new director who was selected for the job over Dolly’s character. There is a lot of verbal sparring between these two, all clean and mostly befitting their roles as church ladies. (It’s the teenagers who do the cussing, but again, there really wasn’t a lot of that.) There is also a teenage romance between Latifah’s daughter and Dolly’s grandson, which is complicated by the adults’ rivalry.

The music is a mix of pop, country and gospel and was very enjoyable. Maybe worth getting the soundtrack album.

I don’t know much about Queen Latifah, but I have liked her in everything I’ve seen her in. Excellent voice.
