Violins and Starships

Well, here I am again, showing off another new dress. I really really hate hate hate the way I look in this photo. The mirror doesn’t lie but the camera certainly does. I was tempted to crop off my head but you all know about timer photos, right? Anyway…

I saw this orange batik fabric at Walmart and it spoke to me. No, really; it did. It kept saying, “Hey, look at me!” and “Come on, you know you can’t live without me,” every time I stopped by to fondle it so I finally gave in. It’s another A-line like two others I’ve made this summer but with a different pocket. This is one of my favorite pocket styles ever. It’s from a 70′s skirt pattern that hasn’t fit me in 30 years. This time I couldn’t find the pattern so I made pattern pieces, using the pocket on a dress I made several years ago as a guide. It didn’t come out quite right but close enough. The colors will work for fall too and we do have a lot of fall days that are warm enough for a dress like this.

Orange Batik Dress

I think this is going to be the last summer thing I make. I have a few fall fabrics but I think I might force myself to take a break from clothes sewing for two or three weeks. I really really need to spend more time working on the quilt. I’m starting to doubt that I will finish it this year. I have three more quilts in mind and already have the fabric for them so I will probably start working on tops too.
