This ‘n’ That

August 22nd, 2012

I want this silly thing. It’s so bright and… uh… sunny. And I am such a child sometimes.

Seriously, What the hell? My apologies to any time travelers out there who might be under the mistaken impression that “hell” is still a really bad or “inappropriate” word but I really can’t wrap my brain around that way of thinking. Even if you do think that “hell” is a Really Bad Word and feel that it’s really important you have to understand that many people don’t even realize it’s all that bad and so you should cut normal, 21st century people a little slack. Oooo! These bird species lithographs are gorgeous. I love old-fashioned nature illustrations. The botanicals are my favorites but bird and insect illustrations are lovely too.

College mascot Pop-Tarts. If I saw the Razorback Pop Tarts in the store I’d probably buy them impulsively though I almost never buy Pop Tarts anymore. I find them strangely tempting when I see them in the store but they’re really not very good. They’re like glorified cheap cookies – almost 200 calories each and almost no nutrition, okay tasting but not really great, and, just like cookies, it’s really hard to eat just one.

A rather odd way of making pancakes. I might try the caramel banana sauce sometime.

I notice that they have re-designed all the Cheezburger sites and they no longer have embed codes, though they do still have a Share on Facebook button. Well, screw Facebook! This is discrimination against us independent folks. Anyway… this would be your cute picture of the day if it was still possible to embed.

Since Blogger has “upload photo” functionality, I just download the Cheezburger photo to my computer and then post it on Blogger anyway. But yeah. I suppose they were getting high bandwidth costs or something and figured that cutting out the hotlinking code was one way to help that. But it does discriminate against non-facebookers.

Also, the Sun is cute, but I have to admit I like the little Mars plush better.

I’ve always copied their pictures to my own server. (And I tend to reduce them in width just a little, mostly because they like 500 pixels wide and I strive for a width of 480 or less.)

I remember a school principal (Not high school) getting high and mighty about me saying “hell”. I also remember dear mom standing there telling him to get over it. I ALSO remember that particular principal throwing a fit with crocodile tears over every single thing I did, which may be the case with this student in the news. It’s a high school diploma. It’s not important. She has all her transcripts. I hope she doesn’t give in and apologize.

Well…. I remember being a little more diplomatic than that. But yeah, public school principals and superintendents are at the top of my list of people who really need to get over themselves. I know they have difficult jobs and have to try balance a lot of conflicting needs and demands and that they “really just want what’s best for all the students” and all that, but it seems like they are most concerned with forcing everyone, both students and parents, to conform to a ridiculous fantasy of upper class Victorian academia.

Forgot to mention, stories like the one about the Prague, OK student (and my own issues) are what comes to mind when I hear about teachers crying about how mean parents are to them.

Notice how, even though I had trouble in school, I can spell Prague correctly.

It’s my experience – from working in an educational bureaucracy all my adult life – that people who get a little power, will exercise that power to the nth degree. (I will refrain from sharing my story of how the head of Motor Pool made me cry in my office one day).

It’s maddening and frustrating to the people who are actually trying to do something useful, to have someone who has more authority than they do (and probably a bigger paycheck) throw up roadblocks in their way.

I like teaching a lot but I could deal a lot better without all the managey stuff and without feeling like I had fifteen different bosses sometimes.

I love the lithographs! Audubon is one of my favorite artists in that style and I do love Gould. Excellent stuff.
