By now you’ve probably heard that comedian George Carlin has died. I’m not sure what I can add to what many others have already said. To be honest, I often found him both annoying and offensive but he did sometimes make a good point and I liked some of his observations about how we use words. This will probably seem a little strange but I enjoy reading what he said more than watching and listening to him say it.
Here are a whole bunch of George Carlin quotes. And I will add two of my favorites:
“We will never be an advanced civilization as long as rain showers can delay the launching of a space rocket.”
“I love and treasure individuals as I meet them; I loathe and despise the groups they identify with and belong to.”
Goodbye George and thanks for all the laughs.

I never really knew too much of him – his early heyday was during a time when I would most definitely not have been permitted to hear those famous seven words. And I’ve never been a huge fan of stand-up comedy. But a lot of his one-liners are pretty funny and pretty revealing.
And he seems like the kind of person who was hard to pigeonhole with simple labels, which I think is worth something in today’s society.
I particularly like that second quotation of his that you posted

He is being widely misquoted; his famous weather report went: “Forecast for tonight, DARK. With increasing lightness toward morning.” I will never forget that. He was hilarious — until he started taking himself too seriously. Alas, that is the fate of many a great entertainer.
