If you watch HGTV you know that granite countertops are the latest must-have feature in high end kitchens. I do like granite but I just found another reason, besides cost, for not having a granite countertop: Some granite contains radioactive elements.

I’ve known this about granite for years. The thing is, it’s both a popular and common stone, so there’s no getting away from it. As if we could get away from radiation anyway — not only did radiation levels go up considerably all over the world after Hiroshima and all the atom-bomb testing, there’s all that radiation from space that occurs naturally.
Anyway, I doubt that anyone, including pregnant woman, are in any special danger from their kitchen countertops. My spidey sense says that this is just another “modern life’s luxuries are baaaaad!” bit of alarmism from the New York Times. I guess they think that one reason their readership is going down is because people are spending all their money on home improvements.

I assume that some are worse than others. I can’t afford it anyway so I have nothing to worry about.
I guess the next HGTV trend will be replacing granite with something safer and “greener”.

LOL. You know they already have countertops made from broken toilets?

broken toilets makes sense actually. It’s porcelain. good countertop material, and you have to do something with the old toilets in states where people don’t take their old toilets out to shoot at them with high powered rifles.
You’d think they’d just chip when you do that. They actually explode. How cool is that?

Well, I have to admit that’s better than putting them in the front yard and planting flowers in them.
