Great View, No Yard

August 20th, 2008

5 Tiny private islands. Owning “my own private island” has never really been one of my dreams and even if it was I definitely would not want any of these. (via Neatorama)

Since we’re dreaming I’d rather have my own square mile right here in the middle of the continent, mostly wooded, house in the exact center of it, nice big, luxurious house but not insanely huge. Porch or deck must be at least half as big as the rest of the house. What about you? You’ve just inherited a fortune or won the lottery or something like that and you can have anything you want. What’s your dream property?

    Mine is much like yours.

I would like a large “spread,” most of it natural vegetation (and I would like to have assistance in managing the ecosystem – doing prescribed burns if necessary, getting rid of invasive exotics, etc.). But I’d also want to have a section (ideally smack in the middle) where I could have my house.

Smack in the middle because I’d want a HUGE “sound buffer” around my house. One thing I’ve learned living in town is that duallies driving down the street are really loud at night and I do not like barking dogs or whining leaf blowers.

But I’d also want it to be close enough to a town or city that had good grocery shopping (and stuff like a bookstore) so I didn’t have to get everything helicoptered in. That’s one of the big drawbacks to the private island idea; unless you’re happy eating conch and coconuts every meal, you have to have some kind of reliable delivery service.

I know it’s probably pathological at least, but I’ve always dreamed of living underground. I think it comes from reading _The Wind in the Willows_ and similar stories when I was a kid. The good guys always live underground; the bad guys live in surface palaces and what-not.

The entrance would be in the woods though :)

I was interested in the “earth sheltered” homes at the beginning of that fad. Some of the interiors looked cozy and cave like and while I can see the appeal of that, I like windows – lots of big windows so I can gaze out at my lovely trees on cold winter days.
